One must stay far from things which destroy the body and accustom himself to things which preserve one’s health. And they are [as follows]: One should eat only when he is hungry and drink only when he’s thirsty. He also should not delay urination or defecation (lit., ‘he should not delay his holes’) even one minute. He should take care to eat and drink only in order to be healthy in body and limb. Therefore, he should not eat all that the palate desires; rather, he should eat what is beneficial for the body. Whoever is idle and does not exercise, or does not move his bowels when he has the need, or is constipated, even if he eats the proper foods and takes care to follow the rules of medicine, will be full of pain for all his days and his strength will fade away.
